Engineering reliable agentic AI through runtime state
As large language model (LLM) agents evolve from single-turn interactions to long-running systems that use tools, APIs, memory, and multi-agent workflows, reliability increasingly depends on the model's surrounding execution infrastructure. This research introduces Harness State Engineering, a runtime-state-centric approach to designing agentic AI systems that are controllable, recoverable, traceable, and auditable throughout execution.
Moving beyond context and harness engineering
While context engineering focuses on determining what information an AI model should receive, Harness State Engineering focuses on what the surrounding runtime must know and manage as the agent acts. The framework complements existing harness engineering by making runtime state a primary consideration, including how information is captured, updated, validated, governed, recovered, and audited throughout complex agent workflows.
Seven dimensions for managing agent runtime state
The research organizes harness state engineering around seven interconnected dimensions: execution, tool, memory/context, verification, observability, governance, and recovery state. Together, these dimensions capture workflow progress, tool permissions and status, information provenance, validation outcomes, operational traces, policy controls, and recovery mechanisms. This structure provides a framework for assessing whether an agent can continue safely, respond to failures, and support investigation and accountability.
Building a Lifecycle for Controlled and Auditable AI
The proposed harness-state lifecycle comprises seven recurring stages: observe, represent, validate, commit, recover, audit, and evolve. Rather than relying solely on unstructured logs, the approach emphasizes structured runtime information to support validation, checkpoints, rollback, resumption, escalation, and evidence-based improvements to agent systems.
Assessing harness state maturity and reliability
The research proposes a five-level maturity model, ranging from implicit to evolvable state, to help organizations assess how effectively their agent infrastructure manages runtime information. It also introduces an evaluation framework covering state completeness, state consistency, recoverability, auditability, and governance compliance, extending assessment beyond whether an agent completes a task successfully.
Supporting enterprise-grade agentic AI
In enterprise and regulated environments, reliable AI requires more than accurate final outputs. Harness State Engineering provides a framework for tracking authorization, validation, provenance, recovery, and governance throughout an agent's execution. By treating runtime state as a core engineering concern, the research lays the foundation for agentic AI systems that operate with greater control, transparency, and accountability.
