End-to-End Independent Testing for a Container Terminal

The Customer

The container terminal built by the customer handles containers for large size deep sea vessels. The terminal design was heavily dependent on high productivity and low cost model. The IT systems, which cater to terminal administration and planning, was designed and developed based on this model.

The Business Challenge

  • Complexity of the system functionality and integration of many systems of various vendors.
  • The target performance of 40 movements per hour for quay cranes is not operational any where in the world today.
  • Consortium vendors working together first time to create the solution.

Solution

The crux of Zensar's approach lies in V-Model of testing adopted for this project. The testing philosophy was to test early and test often. Project risks were identified at various stages and mitigated.

Being involved with the project since the initial stages had helped Zensar gain visibility and apply the most appropriate solution.

Business Benefit

  • Addressing business and IT risks at planned stages of testing lifecycle. This ensured that the system is 'fit for use' by the business users.
  • Zensar's active and early involvement in reviewing business process model, software requirements specification and use cases uncovered many gaps at the requirements stage itself. This resulted in preventing software defects to the tune of 15%.
  • Metrics based approach to review and assess process maturity and productivity resulted in reducing test case creation time by 33% over first four business releases over a period of 15 months
  • High cost savings to the customer due to on-site/offshore model. Zensar managed this project with 75% of team based from offshore.
